Population Of Outback Mining Settlement To Be Moved Out
A rural settlement of roughly 60 people in Northern South Australia is to be permanently closed by the government.
The opal mining settlement of Mintabie is located on the Anangu ( are- aang - oo ) Pitjantatjara (pit-jan- JA - JARRA) Yankunytjatjara (yan-kun-JA-JARRA) lands, which have their own local government.
The government's decision to progressively shut down the settlement comes after a government review found many were living their illegally, the local store manager had been defrauding his aboriginal customers, and that the town was an access point for drugs and alcohol into the wider APY lands.
The review was done in partnership with the APY executive.
